Suffolk Virginia's most popular early known inhabitants were the Nansemond tribe of Native Americans. They settled in four villages along a river near Chuckatuck, now named the Nansemond river after these Native Americans. Colonists from Jamestown began exploring Suffolk shortly after their arrival to the area. Suffolk became an independent city in 1910, and in 1912 an Italian immigrant named Amedeo Obici founded Planters Nut and Chocolate Company, which went on to be a worldwide brand. By 1941, Suffolk was declared to be the peanut capital of the world.

Today, Suffolk attracts many buyers seeking more land and larger yards. Because Suffolk has such a large land mass, developers are building communities to keep pace with this demand. Depending on how far west you want to live, many military families find their commute to the various bases between 20 and 45 minutes. Contrary to what most folks unfamiliar with the area think, Suffolk is not all rural. The Harbourview area of Suffolk is home to several communities, ranging from upper $100K condos to multi-million dollar deep water front homes.  Situated 10 minutes from the Chesapeake Sq Mall, Harborview is surrounded by plenty of shopping, restaurants, theaters and a very active nightlife.   If you are looking for more home for the dollar, larger yards, acreage, or just a more rural setting, Suffolk may be the city for you.  Call your Trustworthy agent today to discuss the pros and con's of living in Suffolk.   If you want to narrow your search to new construction, click here to see all Suffolk New Construction Homes!
